THE HOW
ON INNOVATION
DISTRICTS

For the past 50 years, the landscape of innovation has been dominated by places like Silicon Valley—suburban corridors of spatially isolated corporate campuses, accessible only by car, with little emphasis on the quality of life or on integrating work, housing, and recreation.
In recent years, a rising number of innovative firms and talented workers are choosing to congregate and co-locate in compact, amenity-rich enclaves in the cores of central cities. These hubs, known as Innovation Districts are compact, transit-accessible, technically-wired and offer mixed-use housing, office, and retail. Rather than building on green-field sites, marquee companies in knowledge-intensive sectors are locating key facilities close to other firms, research labs, and universities so that they can share ideas and practice “open innovation.”

The new centralization of ingenuity in these dynamic hubs is a powerful agent of change and has even reshaped the face of conventional workspace culture, networking interactions and neighborhood building amenities.
During the Urban Transformation Conference city representatives will have access to panel discussions, exhibits and networking opportunities that encourage global collaboration and demonstrate how successful interventions employed in one place could be adapted to work in another. Through this exchange, participants will walk away with tangible solutions to implement within their own cities and be the accelerators to striving innovation districts that boost inclusive growth and help bridge economic divisions. At its core, UTC offers an invaluable platform for cities to collaborate with, and most importantly, learn from one another.
URBAN
TRANSFORMATION
CONFERENCE

Since 2014, UTC is organized in The Netherlands as an annual international sanctuary for unbound discussions on urban transformation where we combine thoughts and exchange opinions. UTC – an official EU event during the 2016 Dutch presidency - stimulates the international debate on the future of cities. It is not the goal of the conference to come up with ready-made solutions that may prove outdated tomorrow or perhaps next year, but rather to discuss and stimulate the process of urban transformation, the ongoing design, development and governance of cities to be resilient and agile. UTC targets professionals involved in the broad process of planning and shaping urban environments.
